Our two children (aged 5 and 7 at the time) arrived in Australia with no English. Both attended Toorak Primary School and Spatzenschule at the same time.

Direct integration into Australian classrooms proved far more effective than attending a language school. The long lunch break (1 hour) helped enormously with language acquisition.

In the German system: 45-minute lessons, a rush to complete the curriculum by 1:30 pm. In the Australian system: 5 hours of teaching (equivalent to 6 German lessons), school finishing at 3:30 pm. Extended breaks (11:00–11:30 am; 1:00–2:00 pm) allow for play and rest.
The teaching approach is varied, child-friendly and less pressured. The overall curriculum is comparable – the Australian delivery is simply "less stressful".
